Kanazawa Traditional Kimono:Kaga Yuzen Studio Visit
Kaga Yuzen Kimono

Kaga Yuzen is one of three major kimono dyeing techniques in Japan

known for it’s high level of craftsmanship, following up to 15 handcrafted steps from design to finish.

This tradition was created in Ishikawa Prefecture and features the exquisite Kaga gosai (5 colors of Kaga) which are shades of blue, red, yellow, dark green, and purple.

The patterns traditionally consist of natural motifs and may include old leaves, reflecting nature’s beauty as the artists perceives it.

Kanazawa Adventures features three select kimono studios for you to choose from.

If you don’t know which one to choose, feel free to inquire and we’ll suggest the one which best fits your needs.

Tsurumi Kaga Yuzen Studio

Mr. Tsurumi is from the second generation of artists at Kaga Yuzen artists at Tsurumi Dyeing and Decoration Crafts. At this studio, you’ll see versatility of the artist in the incorporation of another of Kanazawa’s representative crafts: the gold leaf.

Kanazawa produces over 99% of Japanese gold leaf which can be found even in products such as ice cream and coffee. At Tsurumi Dyeing and Decoration Crafts, you’ll be able to make your own gold leaf design over a black dyed cloth piece that you may use as table decoration. You’ll also have the opportunity to take photos on a Kaga Yuzen Kimono.

Akaneya Kimono Yuzen Studio

Located in the heart of the city, Akaneya offers easy to understand explanations on the process of Kaga Yuzen, the symbology behind the motifs and hands-on yuzen painting experience. The incredible Pokémon Kaga Yuzen kimono at the Pokemon Center in Kanzawa Station, is credited to Artist Okuda, serving as a testament to her innovation and commitment to bringing the craft into the present.

At Okuda Kaga Yuzen Dyeing Studio, you’ll paint your own hankerchief guided by the artists hand to take home as a souvenir and take photos in Kaga Yuzen kimono.

Maida Kaga Yuzen Studio

Kaga Yuzen is one of the three main kimono dyeing techniques in Japan. It began about 500 years ago in Kaga province (present day Ishikawa Prefecture). The traditional technique is still  used by the master craftsmen of Kanazawa.

Maida Kaga Yuzen has inherited knowledge from three generations of renowned masters of the craft of kimono dyeing. The founder, Maeda Jinrou, studied under Kimura Uzan, recognized as a National Living Treasure for his importance in the craft. The extensive portfolio of works continued by Maida Kenji and Maida Hitoshi, showcases the versatility of Kaga Yuzen, combining kimono with contemporary art, culture and western clothing among others.

On this experience, the guest will receive a guided visit through the workshop, enjoy the unique displays at the show room and try their hand at making a Kaga Yuzen handkerchief to take back home as a souvenir. The guest will also be able to wear one of the kimonos made by master Maida himself.

Did you know Mr. Maida created Kanazawa Adventures luxury bus outer design? When you board our bus, don’t forget to take a moment to appreciate his art.
