Shirakawa-go is well-known as a place to enjoy traditional Japanese rural views. Located in a very snowy mountain area, this village consists of Gassho style houses that are designed to endure big amounts of snow. These traditional houses made Shirakawa-go a World Heritage village in 1995.
Besides traditional cultural background, the village is also popular with anime lovers as it became a reference for the anime called When Cicadas Cry (“Higurashi no naku koro ni”), so you can find pictures of the main characters in different places there and even write your wish on ema (wooden board for wishes in Japanese Shinto shrines) with the favorite character from this anime.
