Kaga Yuzen: traditional Kimono dyeing experience

Kaga Yuzen is one of the three main kimono dyeing techniques in Japan. It began about 500 years ago in Kaga province (present day Ishikawa Prefecture). The traditional technique is still  used by the master craftsmen of Kanazawa.

Maida Kaga Yuzen has inherited knowledge from three generations of renowned masters of the craft of kimono dyeing. The founder, Maeda Jinrou, studied under Kimura Uzan, recognized as a National Living Treasure for his importance in the craft. The extensive portfolio of works continued by Maida Kenji and Maida Hitoshi, showcases the versatility of Kaga Yuzen, combining kimono with contemporary art, culture and western clothing among others.

On this experience, the guest will receive a guided visit through the workshop, enjoy the unique
displays at the show room and try their hand at making a Kaga Yuzen handkerchief to take back
home as a souvenir. The guest will also be able to wear one of the kimonos made by master Maida
himself.

Private transportation can be arranged in a Hiace Wagon (+30,000 JPY) or Luxury Bus (+36,000 JPY) upon request.

Our bus design was made by Hitoshi Maida. He used the Kaga Yuzen technique to incorporate symbols that represent Kanazawa: the Yukitsuri and the emblem of the Maeda family, the Kanazawa rulers during the feudal period.
