This is the ancient nanakusa ceremony, presented by Otomo san, the patriarch of the ootomorou restaurant. The ceremony is being held in the centuries-old otomoro storehouse. Meaning seven greens, Nanakusa was performed the week after the Lunar New Year in high-ranking samurai and imperial families. It is said that it’s still performed in the Imperial Palace today.

The ceremony’s two meanings are:
1, at this stage of winter, one needed to eat the early-spring leafy greens to get vitamins into your system. The pounded greens were placed into rice stews that simmered on the winter hearth. These vitamins helped prevent sickness;

2, the tapping, using local agricultural tools, and singing was done non-stop for days to keep birds away. There was an awareness that the birds returning to Japan from Asian wintering areas brought illness. Of course, today, we understand these to be the seasonal currents on how influenza viruses spread.

In Kanazawa, the Otomo family carries on this tradition. Aligned to the Maeda family since feudal times, the Otomos fed the ruling clan and preserved culinary ceremonies and traditions. The exquisite Otomoro restaurant sits in its original location near the old castle and its spirit, cuisine, architecture, and artwork elicit the significance and symbolism of Kanazawa’s past and present.
